Over 26 protesters were killed and scores other wounded in confrontations between security forces and the anti regime protesters backed by the defected army soldiers and militias of the Islah Islamist party at the roundabout of Kentucky and al-Qa’a neighborhood on Sunday.
The protesters accused the security forces and militants loyal to the regime of killing the protesters. For their part the ministry of interior accused the defected army and the militia of Hamid al-Ahmar of firing at the protesters from the roofs of the Sana’a University and from the back of the protesters.
The confrontations started at 11 am Sana’a local time and continued till 7:30 pm. The defected army tanks fired at the anti riot forces destroying two of their vehicles at Knetukey roundabout that used to be the border between the anri regime forces and the forces loyal to the president.
The ministry of interior said that 65 anti riot policemen were severely wounded. Eyewitnesses said that the defected army soldiers backed by the tanks captured the bridge that overruns al-Zubairi street and parts of the Zubairi street after defeating the security forces.
The protesters backed by the militias of Islah party and the defected army also sat fire to the power generating station located in al-Qa’a neighborhood near the old building of Sana’a University.
Eyewitnesses said that there were extensive fire from different weapons including 12/7 machineguns from the back of the protesters but could not confirm whether the fire was directed at the protesters or at the anti riot forces.
The protesters also sat fire on and later captured the branch of the ministry of public works located in the ring road crossing Zubairi Street.
The spokesperson of the protesters Radhwan Masood said that the remains of the family system are committing suicide through killing the people in Sana’a, Abyan, Arhab and Taiz.
While Yasser al-Shargabi said that the remains of the regime have sent a strong message to the peaceful demonstrators that they would kill any one that calls them to leave.
Earlier on the day and before the break out of the confrontations the ministry of interior said that they could detain a number of the militias of Islah disguising in uniforms of the Republican guards and of the central security forces that are loyal to the government.
The ministry also said that the security forces detained cars carrying uniforms of the republican guards and security forces while were heading toward the protesting site near Sana’a University.
Abdullah al-Hathiri called on the international community and on what he called the liberals of the world to stand firmly against the killers affiliated to the Yemeni regime. “The Gulf Cooperation Council to adopt a honored position instead of hiding the number one killer, Ali Abdullah Saleh,” said al-Hathiri.
He also called on the vice president Abdu Raboo Mansour Hadi to announce his position today and to prove that he is a patriotic character.
Lawyer Salim Allaw said he condemned Ahmad Ali Abdullah Saleh the commander of the republican guards of committing a genocide adding that today’s massacre was documented by HOOD organization calling on the UN to send an international team to investigate over this massacre.
Other groups of protesters backed by militia and defected army soldiers managed to break through security force lines and advance to near the Yemeni Republican Palace at the center of Sana’a, turning the clashes with the security forces into street battles.
The ministry of interior alleged that eyewitnesses said that a vehicle with plate number 3989 carried corpses of those militants killed in the battles with the government forces in Arhab district to the protesting site’s field medical clinic so as to allege that they were protesters killed by the security forces.
